This was the first road bridge across the lower Murray and was completed in 1879. The bridge also became a shared road and rail bridge in 1886 until the adjacent rail bridge was completed in 1925.

In 1979 the Swanport Bridge for the South Eastern Freeway was completed ... 5 kilometres downstream ... removing a large percentage of traffic from this bridge.
